BHP has launched its new Trading Tracks program, aimed at supporting Indigenous businesses and fostering economic growth across the Pilbara.

Partnering with C-Res and the Local Buying Foundation, BHP said the program will offer training and advice on all aspects of business development.

Trading Tracks aims to grow skills ranging from crafting a robust business plan, to tender, health, safety, environment and community (HSEC), and strategic support.

The program is set to be administered by Indigenous Management Group, a Western Australian consultancy firm specialising in the development and growth of Aboriginal entities.

BHP head of global Indigenous procurement Chris Cowan launched the program at the Pilbara Summit, which took place from October 26–27.

“With our long-term partner C-Res, who delivers BHP’s Local Buying Program, we’re proud to continue supporting the growth and sustainability of Traditional Owner and Indigenous businesses in the Pilbara,” he said.

“We heard from suppliers that it can be difficult to navigate the available services, so we hope that Trading Tracks will bridge this gap and enable Traditional Owner and Indigenous business to access the support they need for their growth and sustainability.”

Indigenous Management Group managing director and proud WA Goldfields Wongutha man Judd Harris said he is passionate about working with Aboriginal enterprises that enhance local communities.

“Over the coming months, our team’s focus is on designing an approach that is responsive to the local context and has the foundations of respect, collaboration, and impact,” he said.

“We will be engaging Pilbara Traditional Owner groups throughout the program, and with Kariyarra, Palyku, Yinhawangka, Nyiyaparli, Nyamal, Banjima peoples as we establish our presence.”

The program will operate across the west and east Pilbara, with regional hubs based in Port Hedland and Newman.

The South Hedland Hub officially commenced its operations on October 11, with two dedicated staff members working from the office.

The staffing and facilities for the Newman Hub are still in the process of confirmation, and the Hedland staff will temporarily cover services for Newman.
