CQUniversity sees a $3.7 million boost from BMA

Metallurgical coal producer and supplier BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) has renewed its partnership with Central Queensland University (CQUniversity) to continue the First Nations Tertiary Education and Research program.

The BMA and CQUniversity partnership was established in 2012, and the First Nations Tertiary Education and Research program aims to drive better outcomes for central Queensland’s First Nations students.

Since the beginning of the partnership, BMA has invested more than $9 million in CQUniversity.

BMA head of production Steve Johnston said the company is excited to be recommitting to its partnership with CQUniversity.

“Over the next five years we will provide funding of more than $3.7 million to continue funding student scholarships, research projects and pathways, and community engagement initiatives led by the University’s Office of Indigenous Engagement and BMA Chair in Indigenous Engagement role,” he said.

It is expected for more than $2.3 million of the investment to be directed towards First Nations research projects and researcher development.

“The First Nations Tertiary Education and Research program brings people and resources together to build a better world, by committing to working together to improve the livelihoods of First Nations people, setting up regional Queensland to be resilient and sustainable over the longer term,” Johnston said.

“I am immensely proud to continue our partnership with the CQUniversity Office of Indigenous Engagement.”

CQUniversity vice-chancellor and president Nick Klomp said the university appreciates BMA’s continued support.

“I would like to thank BMA for their contribution to CQUniversity as it allows us to deliver several high-value scholarships and programs that directly support students and our local communities,” he said.

Coinciding with its First Nations Tertiary Education and Research program partnership, BMA and CQUniversity are currently partnering on the BMA Chair in Automation and Future Work Skills partnership and the Queensland Future Skills partnership.
