Alcoa makes progress towards ESG goals

BHP, Curtin University, and Greening Australia partnered up three years ago to trail vegetation barriers in Port Hedland.

Aluminium producer Alcoa has released its sustainability report for 2022.

Alcoa’s sustainability report is designed to provide a detailed overview of its approach to managing and achieving its ESG initiatives, and highlights its progress in reaching established sustainability goals.

It also outlines the company’s progress to indicators defined by the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board, key sustainable development goals from the United Nations, the International Council for Mining and Metals’ ten principles and the Global Reporting Initiative standards.

Highlights from the report include:

  • the company maintaining its commitment to safety with zero fatalities, as well as maintaining its commitment to governance through zero human rights violations
  • a 4.6 per cent annual decrease in carbon dioxide emissions and a 2.5 per cent decrease in landfilled waste
  • a 36.6 per cent increase in hires from underrepresented groups
  • continued development on research and development programs that have the potential to further decarbonise and help achieve Alcoa’s ambition of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050
  • 86 per cent of electricity that powers Alcoa’s smelters came from renewable sources
  • $US7 million invested in communities through Alcoa Foundation grants and corporate giving programs
  • earning EcoVadis’ platinum rating, putting Alcoa in the top 1 per cent of companies across more than 200 industries globally.

Alcoa chief executive officer Roy Harvey said that performing responsible and sustainable practices is vital for Alcoa’s businesses, customers, and the rest of the world.

“In fact, strong environmental, social and governance performance will be key differentiators for the future, and that is why Alcoa has a strategic priority to advance sustainably with a vision to reinvent the aluminium industry,” Harvey said.

Prior the release of Alcoa’s 2022 sustainability report, the company’s Portland Aluminium joint venture in Victoria was recognised for its ESG performance by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative.
