Mineral Resources (MinRes) has welcomed 27 mining engineering students to its Mt Marion lithium project for the student’s first on-site mine experience.
Local and international Masters students from the WA School of Mines (WASM) were treated to a behind-the-scenes look at the hard-rock lithium operation and spodumene processing plant, while also sitting in on presentations on-site activites and mining roles.
Located 40km south-west of Kalgoorlie, the Mt Marion operation is jointly owned by MinRes and Ganfeng Lithium, one of the world’s largest lithium hydroxide producers.
Each company holds a 50 per cent stake in the project.
The spodumene processing plant at the mine is currently being upgraded to a production capacity of 900,000 tonnes per annum.
“Students found the experience fascinating and they had plenty of questions, particularly about the lithium mining process, and the environmental impacts and sustainability of mining,” MinRes learning specialist Zoe Clements said.
“Our Mt Marion project is supported by over 600 people across various roles and experience levels – including entry-level and graduate positions – each building their own career path by supporting this world-class lithium operation.”
Clements, who accompanied the group, said the tour was a great opportunity for MinRes and WASM to deepen their working relationship while promoting mining careers to students.
MinRes manages the operation of Mt Marion, with produces lithium needed to support the world’s growing demand for battery-powered technology.
