Barminco sees green at Red Chris

For the second time in less than a week, Perenti subsidiary Barminco has been awarded a contract extension for underground development.

The new contract extension will see Barminco continue underground development works at Newcrest Mining’s Red Chris copper-gold mine in British Columbia, Canada.

Valued at $90 million, the 12-month extension supports the work that Barminco has conducted at Red Chris since June 2021.

“Our strategy in North America is to partner with tier-one operators and long-life assets, where we can add value over the long term,” Perenti managing director and chief executive officer Mark Norwell said.

“We continue to diligently progress our North American growth strategy and have key executive management personnel based in the region to ensure we develop the right relationships and become engrained within the sector while remaining disciplined in the execution of our strategy.”

Barminco has also recently secured a nine-month contract extension at IGO’s Flying Fox mine where the company has been employed as a contractor since December 2004.

Speaking on the Flying Fox contract extension, Norwell said strong relationships were the key to the success of each business.

Contract Mining president Paul Muller said Barminco has helped to transform Red Chris into a long life, tier one operation.

“We have developed very strong relationships with the local communities including a partnership with the Tahltan Nation Development Corporation and are very pleased to be on site at Red Chris for at least the next 12 months,” he said.

Work at Red Chris will be used to support future underground exploration activities and access to potential block cave workings.
