Collie coal mine open for visitors

NSW Treasurer Matt Kean will unveil requirements which force coal companies to reserve 10 per cent of their output exclusively for domestic use.

The Collie Underground Coal Mine Experience has gone through a number of improvements and is ready to welcome inquiring minds.

The Western Australian Government is encouraging anyone who wants to learn more about the state’s coal mining history to visit the site.

“The State Government is investing in a strong future for Collie where there is a range of employment opportunities including modern industrial jobs,” WA Regional Development Minister Don Punch said.

“Part of setting up Collie for the long term involves unlocking the town’s tourism potential through investing in tourist attractions and experiences such as the Collie Underground Coal Mine Experience, which is a credit to everyone involved – a unique heritage attraction.”

The attraction was originally constructed in the 1980s to promote Collie’s heritage as a coal mining town and encourage visitors to learn more about what underground mining was like in the 1950s.

Now a heritage attraction, the experience was reopened by Punch and Collie-Preston Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Jodie Hanns to further enhance the tourism opportunities in Collie.

While visiting the site, guests can explore the history of coal mining in the area, gain insight into the mining jobs of the time, explore historical artefacts, and hear stories from former mine workers.

“Many people have worked underground in Collie over the decades, and I encourage you to find out what life was like for them,” Punch said.

“It’s great that former mine workers are making themselves available to give guided tours, providing first-hand insight to the role they’ve played in powering the state.”

Hanns said she was pleased with how the experience is looking after the redevelopments.

“The attraction has long been an asset for Collie, but the upgrades transform it into a contemporary experience that meet the expectations of today’s visitors,” she said.

“The Collie Underground Coal Mine Experience highlights Collie’s history and the workers who helped shape our town, while offering up a new heritage experience for enthusiasts and families.”
