Mining giant Whitehaven Coal has invested in the Gunnedah Koala Sanctuary in NSW, in a move poised to help the lovable and endangered Australian animal.

Gunnedah Shire already has a reputation as the ‘koala capital of the world’, a position that should be cemented by Whitehaven’s investment.

The cash injection will allow for the development of a range of tourist attractions, all focused on the awareness, education and preservation of koalas.

A world-class facility, which includes a koala hospital and protected natural habitats, is currently under construction for the 60-acre sanctuary site.

The proposed sanctuary will have on-site accommodation as well as hospitality options.  The sanctuary will also allow universities to study not only the koalas, but also other native species that inhabit the protected habitats.

The $2 million contributed by the mining company builds on collaborative funding from the NSW Government and other bodies, giving the project an approximate value of $24 million.

“This is a unique opportunity for Gunnedah to establish a world-class koala sanctuary that will not only support conservation, but also attract visitors to the region and provide benefits for the local environment and community,” Whitehaven managing direction and chief executive officer Paul Flynn said.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with the Gunnedah Shire Council on this exciting development, which will create a positive environmental and economic impact for years to come.

“This major investment is another way we are supporting regional growth and delivering tangible benefits to our communities.”

Gunnedah Shire mayor Jamie Chaffey expressed his gratitude.

“Whitehaven’s support is helping to make this exciting and important new venture a reality,” he said.

“The Gunnedah Koala Sanctuary will go beyond tourism to play a role in both conservation and education about one of the world’s favourite animals. We are really excited about the future of this facility and thank Whitehaven for their generous contribution.”
