After a lengthy global search, IGO has announced the appointment of a new chief executive officer (CEO) and managing director.

Ivan Vella will take the helm of the company no later than December this year, filling the void left by the tragic passing of former IGO CEO Peter Bradford in October last year.

Vella is a mining and resources industry veteran, his career spanning two decades with Rio Tinto, where he is currently chief executive, aluminium, as well as a member of Rio’s executive committee.

Prior to his current role Ivan was tasked with leading Rio’s iron ore business in Australia when he was appointed as interim CEO following the Juukan Gorge incident. Vella played a leading role in commencing the work to rebuild relationships with the affected Traditional Owners, the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura people.

Vella has also worked as chief operating officer (COO) for Rio Tinto Coal and COO at Oyu Tolgoi, Rio’s copper mine in Mongolia.

“I am thrilled and honoured to be given the opportunity to join and lead the talented and strong team at this important time in IGO’s history,” Vella said.

“The company’s purpose and values deeply resonate with me and IGO has positioned itself brilliantly to be at the forefront of the global transition to a green energy future. I am looking forward to playing a key role in this next stage of the company’s development.”

IGO chair Michael Nossal said the company was looking forward to its next exciting phase of growth under Vella.

“There are very few executives in the mining industry that have the breadth of knowledge, strategic capability, experience and passion that Ivan has developed over his career,” he said.

“Most importantly, Ivan shares the values and purpose-driven approach to the industry that has become the core of what IGO represents.”
